Dawnstar
The Dawnstar is the title given to a pair of supporting characters. The original Dawnstar appears in Chapter 4’s portrait and is mentioned in Scorpionlord and Hong Yi’s Journal Portraits. The current Dawnstar is mentioned in the Crane Immortal’s portrait and has only been recently appointed to his role.
Background
The original Dawnstar was the son of Boddhisattva Pilanpo and the childhood friend of [Hong Yi](/hong-yi), and his true form was that of a rooster. Because of his true form, he was mentioned to have been particularly skilled in dealing with insect or arachnid guais. During [Sun Wukong](/sun-wukong) and the Tang Monk's journey, the original Dawnstar aided them by helping deal with the queen of the Kingdom of Women after it is revealed that she is a Scorpion Guai, and his eye was used to help craft the [Weaver's Needle](/weaver27s-needle) that defeated the [Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master](/hundred-eyed-daoist-master).
After Wukong's departure, the original Dawnstar became too close to his mortal ties and eventually abandoned his role. The current Dawnstar is an unrelated individual. Although he was curious over why his predecessor had suddenly left his post, the Crane Immortal advises the new Dawnstar not to think too deeply, as it was his predecessor's absence that allowed him to rise.
Relations with Duskveil
Throughout the game, there are several hints that Duskveil is the undead or corrupted form of the original Dawnstar that aided Wukong previously. These hints are:
冠簪五岳金光彩，The Five Peak pins in his hat gleamed gold;
笏执山河玉色琼。The mountain and river tablet he held was of the finest jade.
袍挂七星云叆叇，The Seven Stars hung from his waist amid clouds and mist;
腰围八极宝环明。Bright were the rings of jade on his Eight−pole sash.
