Bodhisattva Guanyin

Bodhisattva Guanyin is a minor character in Black Myth: Wukong, making a small appearance during Chapter 1’s ending, and is mentioned in Black Bear Guai’s Journal Entry.

Description

A divine and compassionate being, Bodhisattva Guanyin had previously helped both the Tang Monk and [Sun Wukong](/sun-wukong) on their adventures, helping gain the submission of both Black Bear Guai and [Red Boy](/red-boy). The Guanyin Temple on the [Black Wind Mountain](/black-wind-mountain) is named after her. When Black Bear Guai asks her why [Elder Jinchi](/elder-jinchi), who was supposed to have freed himself of worldly desires, had become obsessed with the Tang Monk's golden kasaya, she sarcastically replies that without such robes, how would anyone even know that he had released himself of his desires.

Journey to the West

Bodhisattva Guanyin is a recurring character in Journey to the West, often receiving requests from Sun Wukong for help though she is reluctant at times to help clean his mess. She is also responsible for selecting and converting Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing and Bai Longma before instructing them to assist the Tang Monk for his pilgrimage West. Guanyin notably helps Wukong subdue both Black Bear Guai and Red Boy, taking both of them in as her disciples and helping both reform their ways. She is also called in to help the Tang Monk when the Six-eared Macaque disguises himself as Wukong, but she is unable to discern which of the two is fake. Guanyin was responsible for bringing the Tang Monk's party back to China after they secured the scriptures, but after learning that they were still one trial short, she decides to leave the group at the Heaven-Reaching River and have it serve as their final ordeal to overcome.
