Red Boy
Description
Red Boy is the son of Princess [Rakshasi](/rakshasi), who was impregnated after being forced to drink from the River of Child-bearing following her [husband](/bull-king)'s decision to join hands with [Sun Wukong](/sun-wukong). Though Red Boy was close to his mother, he never truly considered the Bull King as his father, seeing him as weak to have submitted to the Celestial Court despite the suffering they caused his mother. When Wukong's party requests for his mother's fan to proceed in their journey, Red Boy adamantly refuses in contrast to Princess Rakshasi's willingness to lend her fan.
This, in turn, results in him being beaten by Wukong and inevitably drags his mother into conflict as she turns against Wukong after her son's treatment. Following his defeat, Red Boy became a disciple for [Bodhisattva Guanyin](/bodhisattva-guanyin) and became an acquainted with the [Black Bear Guai](/black-bear-guai), another disciple that had been subdued by Wukong previously. One day, Black Bear Guai would receive an important request from the Celestial Court. Although he did not know what is was for, Red Boy wished to accompany him for the task, but Black Bear Guai politely refused and departed from Guanyin's domain.
Like Black Bear Guai, Red Boy left his discipleship with Guanyin and reverted back to his old self, returning home with plans to take his revenge on his defeat from Wukong through the [Destined One](/destined-one).
Location
From [Field of Fire](/field-of-fire)'s Fallen Furnace Crater Shrine, just proceed forward and a cutscene will start that will lead to a fight with Red Boy. Once he is defeated, he will transform into [Yaksha King](/yaksha-king).
Upon its defeat, Red Boy won't drop anything.
Behaviour
Red Boy is vengeful against Wukong for defeating him the 1st time, in battle his fighting style is similar to that of an angry child. In his first phase he will use his flaming spear to attack with fiery spear strikes, thrusts and slashes in wide arcs at close range, he can also throw his fiery spear as a projectile weapon. Red Boy will breathe streams of Samadhi fire to burn opponents at close range, and unleash fiery heat waves in battle as well.
In his second phase he will float high in the air create fiery clones of himself, which launch themselves at the player before exploding into flames, this continuous attack must be avoided or tanked with Transformation spells otherwise it will do massive damage to the player. After the clone attack ends, Red Boy will descend to the ground in a final strike, he will then attack with his spear and Samadhi fire techniques more aggressively for the remainder of his fight.
Background
On his red skin, talent may shine,
Eyes glaring bright, a mischievous sign.
Samadhi Fire forged, yet heart unrefined,
The gate to Mount Lingshan lies within the mind.
For many years, Red Boy had been having the same nightmare. In his childhood, he shared this nightmare with his mother.
"Mother, there were so many people, they were all coming to kill me!"
"My dear, once you fall asleep again, you'll forget all about it by tomorrow."
Yet the boy was excited: "But I am very powerful. I defeated monks as tall as mountains, strange birds, and fire-breathing statues... I am not afraid of them at all."
"Oh, how brave you are, my dear!"
He continued: "I dreamt that I grew up into an adult, with long horns on my head and long spikes on my hands. I could kill a bunch of bad people at once. But there were too many of them, I couldn't kill them all. Later, some strange people I had never seen before came. They hung quietly in the sky, not coming down, just silently watching me from above."
His mother pulled him into her arms: "If that day ever comes, your father and I will go to the sky with you and kill them all."
"Will we die?"
"..."
"I dreamt that they killed me, and I turned into a red lotus flower. And mother, you picked this lotus flower, and I became your child again."
"..."
He continued to chatter: "Mother, if I die, would you be willing to give birth to me again?"
"Don't you ever say this again!"
Journey to the West
Red Boy is the son of Princess Iron Fan and the [Bull King](/bull-king) and is known for his skilled spearmanship and Samadhi Fire, which cannot be extinguished by mortal means. Wild and untamed, Red Boy cycled through 52 religious teachers, none of which were able to truly humble him. When the Tang Monk approached Mount Hao, Red Boy hoped to take him prisoner so that he and his father could extend their lives by eating him.
Red Boy initially disguises himself as an innocent child tied to a tree, but Wukong is able to see through the ruse and tries to throw Red Boy off a cliff instead. Seeing that his plan was foiled, Red Boy quickly summoned a whirlwind to take the Tang Monk before successfully escaping back to his cave. As Red Boy's father was one of Wukong's sworn brothers, he and Zhu Bajie initially make a request for him to release the Tang Monk, but Red Boy responds by brandishing his spear and attacking the two instead.
After 20 rounds, Zhu Bajie joined the fray, and Red Boy retaliated by using his Samadhi Fire to engulf the area. Wukong was unable to find Red Boy in the smoke, while Red Boy assumed that he had won and returned back to his cave. For their next encounter, Wukong brings the Eastern Dragon King and hopes that his rain will extinguish Red Boy's fire, but this fails as the Samadhi Fire is too powerful for the Dragon King's rain, and Wukong is nearly killed due to the high amount of smoke and the shock from suddenly jumping into a cold stream when trying to cool himself.
Realizing he needs a more powerful ally, Wukong sends Bajie to meet with [Bodhisattva Guanyin](/bodhisattva-guanyin), but Red Boy catches wind of their plan and transforms himself into Guanyin and manages to trick and capture Bajie. To get back at Red Boy, Wukong disguises himself as the Bull King and is invited into the cave to consume the Tang Monk. Red Boy is able to deduce his "father" is a fake and demands for his "father" to state when his birthday was. Seeing that he was caught in the act, Wukong initially fights Red Boy before leaving and teasing him for attacking his own "father".
Wukong would personally visit Guanyin afterwards, who is enraged that Red Boy used her image in such a manner. For their third encounter, Red Boy's Samadhi Fire is finally put out when Guanyin dumps a sea's worth of water from her vase. Without his Samadhi Fire, Red Boy withdraws to his cave and refuses to do battle with Wukong. When Guanyin steps up, Red Boy attacks her with his spear, knocking her off her Lotus Throne. In an act of disrespect, Red Boy would sit atop Guanyin's throne, but she responds by turning her throne into a bed of knives, wounding his legs and causing him to submit.
As soon as his legs are healed, however, Red Boy turns against Guanyin and tries to attack her a second time, but she sees through this and binds his head, wrists and legs with her golden rings. Suffering the pain when these rings are tightened, Red Boy genuinely submits to Guanyin and becomes her disciple.
Following his subjugation, he remains with Guanyin at Mt. Putuo when Wukong returns. Red Boy, now known as Shancai, is much more mellow, and his reunion with Wukong is a more peaceful encounter.
