Description

Once chief among the ranks, his countenance dark, In crimson silk pants, a striking mark. With icy blows, he mocks their plight, A jesting whiff, his foes left in a fright. The Macaque Chief knelt with his back hunched, folding his dark wings before the golden Buddha statue at the feet of Yellowbrow. Yellowbrow raised his hand, pinching the feathers, and said, "Such crude methods... The one who dared to use them on you monkeys was truly ignorant of the ways of the world." With that, he waved his Spikeshaft Cudgel, and specks of Will poured over the Macaque Chief, shining like the galaxy. The black wings trembled and retracted back into the monkey's body. The Macaque Chief was stunned, and reached to touch his back, overjoyed. Yellowbrow laughed heartily, "You were a chief under Sun Wukong. Now that he is dead, you need not wander anymore. I am rebuilding the New Thunderclap Temple to save all from suffering. Why not stay here?" Seeing the Macaque Chief hesitate, Yellowbrow continued, "I know you have endured much hardship. To rank among the high, one must first toil among the low. You have already been low and toiled. Now, join me, and my teachings will elevate you among the highest." The Macaque Chief scratched his head, seeming tempted. Yellowbrow added, "In this world, the weak are often oppressed, while the strong act with impunity. The suffering you endured was ultimately due to a lack of power. Think about it, if you had the abilities of that monkey who wreaked such havoc in the Celestial Palace, it would have been others who would have suffered." Recalling the bitterness and hardships of the past years, the Macaque Chief couldn't help but shed tears. He quickly prostrated himself at the feet of the fat monk, kowtowing repeatedly. Yellowbrow laughed heartily, unfastened the sack at his waist, and placed the Macaque Chief inside. "Very well. I will teach you now," he said.

Location

Macaque Chief is encountered three times as he fleets after the first two fights. From the [Snowhill Path](/snowhill-path),'s Frost-Clad Path Shrine, continue forward and after a bit a cutscene will start, showing Macaque Chief. Continue straight for a bit more defeating some frozen corpses and Macaque Chief will be waiting atop of the hill. After he is defeated, he will flee. The second encounter is in [Pagoda Realm](/pagoda-realm)'s Warding Temple. From the Shrine, just continue upstairs. Macaque Chief will be there. After the fight, the [Destined One](/destined-one) will obtain [Ring of Fire](/ring-of-fire). The third encounter is in [New Thunderclap Temple](/new-thunderclap-temple)'s Mahavira Hall. After the first fight with [Yellowbrow](/yellowbrow), he will absorb the [Destined One](/destined-one) into his bag and have him fight the Macaque Chief for a last time. Upon its defeat, Macaque Chief will drop [Refined Iron Sand](/refined-iron-sand) and [Yaoguai Core](/yaoguai-core) x2. You will also obtain [Umbral Abyss](/umbral-abyss), a transformation spell allowing you to turn into Macaque Chief.

Behavior

Macaque Chief's regular attacks are sword combos that often end with a long range swing attack. Macaque Chief is capable of throwing up or farting at the player. After taking certain damage, Macaque Chief will drop on its knees and beg for its life. A moment later, Macaque Chief would throw a long range sword attack. During the second encounter Macaque Chief transforms and gains wings and becomes much more aggressive with bigger range of attacks.

Lore

Boss Name:Red-buttocked baboon, 赤尻马猴 The Chinese characters on the left figure is "赤尻马猴". The (red) was written by Ouyang Tong (欧阳通, 625-691 A.D.) and is from the Daoyin Venerable Master Stele (道因法师碑)[1], which was compiled by Li Yan (李俨) and written by Ouyang Tong during the Tang Dynasty (663 A.D.). In the novel, Tathāgata said, “There are five kinds of immortals in the universe and five kinds of creatures. however, four kinds of monkeys which also do not belong to any of these ten species.” They are: These four kinds of monkeys are not classified in the ten species, nor are they contained in the names between Heaven and Earth. There are two red-buttocked baboons who were subordinates of Wukong (in Chapter 3). Macaque Chief's species is the Red-buttocked baboon (赤尻马猴) in the [Novel](/journey-to-the-west).
