Zhu Bajie

Background

Born with a clumsy heart, trapped in life's advance and retreat, Breaking precepts repeatedly, following nature, not the Buddha's feat. With rake and tusk, smashing fate, burrowing karma's weight, Rolling in the muddy world, heedless of scorn or debate. In the highest sky, above the Jade Pool. Amidst the swirling clouds and mist, celestial maidens flitted to and fro. Today, the Queen Mother of the West was hosting a lotus-viewing banquet. As Admiral Tianpeng walked past the gate, he saw a tall, burly man blocked by a celestial maiden. "Admiral Curtainraiser," the maiden said in a polite but cold manner, "without a handwritten invitation from the Queen Mother, you cannot sit by the pool. If you don't mind, why not take a seat in the side hall and have some tea." The burly man responded in obedience, but his gaze fixed in the main hall. At such behavior, Tianpeng subtly shook his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. He presented his invitation to the other maiden at the gate and strode in, his head held high. The banquet was in full swing, with celestial officials exchanging toasts, their joyful laughter resonating throughout the hall, creating an atmosphere of mirth and merriment. Tianpeng, an admiral who guarded the celestial river, seldom attended such festive gatherings. However, he managed to greet everyone as if he was well-acquainted with them all, all while mindful not to overindulge in wine. The God of Longevity stood beside the Queen Mother, stroking his beard and chuckled, "Such extravagance. I wonder how would the Peach Banquet surpass it." A constellation officer, standing nearby, chuckled at the Elder's concern, "Elder, such worries are in vain. With the allure of those nine-thousand-year peaches, even a casual arrangement of tables outside the Celestial Gate would draw the dignitaries from across the three realms, be they noble or humble, eager to partake in a taste." A red-faced immortal sneered, "It's not the peaches they seek, but rather to bow before the Jade Emperor and the Three Supremes, and worship the Buddhas of the west. Such assemblies are scarce pretexts for them to curry favor and bask in the company of the divine." The Queen Mother spoke with solemn dignity, "The Peach Banquet is no trivial matter. Our gathering today is but a prelude, a rehearsal of the rites and rituals that must be executed with exactness and reverence." Upon concluding her speech, the Queen Mother signaled to the Lord of Luna with a glance. With a few claps of his hands, a group of maidens dressed in white entered the hall. The maidens took their positions by the Jade Pool and began to play instruments, sing, and dance. Among them, one dancer, with hair like silver, and a dress like clouds, stood out with her exceptional grace. Tianpeng had never seen the beautiful celestial maidens so closely, and he was fascinated. A celestial maiden in a violet gauze dress, holding an exquisite cup of wine with both of her hands. "Admiral," she softly called. Drenched in his fascination, Tianpeng took the cup from her hands, yet his gaze never left the white dancing sleeves. After the dance concluded, Tianpeng regained senses. He rose up to toast the Queen Mother, yet the queue was long; by the time he reached the end of it, he found himself already outside the gate. Suddenly, he heard someone shouting, "Shoes! His shoes!" He looked over and saw two celestial officers supporting a drunken monkey as they hurried past. Tianpeng thought to himself, When will I ever get to be as drunk as that monkey?

Personality

Zhu Bajie generally has a grumpy, carefree and rude attitude, not showing much courtesy or respect to others apart from a few close friends, he additionally has a short temper and tends to shout profanities and threaten opponents with his power when angered. Much like his novel counterpart, Bajie also has a perverted and lustful personality and likes to flirt with pretty women wherever he goes, joyfully laughing when doing so. Bajie is also gluttonous and loves to eat good food, sometimes just thinking of food in the middle of battles. Bajie also has a proud and boastful side in battle, proclaiming his former status as a celestial admiral and constantly boasting about how powerful his rake is in combat, much to Sun Wukong's amusement. He also tends to be quite impatient, and less spiritually enlightened compared to his peers in the Journey to the West. Despite his spiritual flaws Bajie is still pious enough as a Buddhist to practice being a vegetarian, as he mentioned to the Destined one. Despite these negative traits deep down Bajie is a kind hearted, loyal and compassionate person, showing bravery and loyalty towards close friends like Sun Wukong and even guiding, protecting and battling alongside the Destined one on his path to reincarnate as the new Sun Wukong. He is also compassionate enough to show concern for close friends, such as when he wanted to help the Destined one battle against the Stone monkey in the final chapter. Bajie has also shown to have matured and wizened quite a bit after the Journey to the West, showing more intelligence and use of tactics when infiltrating enemy turf to gather information and finding new paths out to safety, as well as being more suspicious and cautious towards strangers who could be Yaoguais in disguise, no longer being as gullible as before.

Behavior

Zhu Bajie while being under the influence of the needle is an aggressive boss that mainly uses his rake to attack players with. In his first fight at the Webbed hollow, he has increased in size, and primarily uses rake swings, smashes and spinning tornado attacks to aggressively attack the player head on, he can also fire streams of mud to attack players from a distance. He can still be stunned and immobilized while swinging his rake. In his second fight, Zhu Bajie in his first phase continues his usual rake attacks as per his first fight, but in his second phase he transforms into his large Boar form where he is even more powerful and aggressive than before. In his Boar form he does tusk swipes, back kicks and stomps but most notably he uses fast charging attacks to ram into players in order to gore them, in each final charge attack he attempts to body slam the player, leaving him more vulnerable to attack. He will also use the ability to send shockwaves of earth and mud at the player, as well as transform into powerful mud animals to attack the player with, from a leaping and constant swimming giant mud catfish to a large stampeding herd of mud rhinos. As an ally, Bajie generally has a three-hit combo with his rake, the last hit being able to stagger enemies, he can also charge at enemies as well. Bajie can also summon a red star constellation which summons red orbs that can strike enemies from a distance. If the Destined One's health is low, he will spew alcohol from his snout to heal the player. Notably, Bajie will make sarcastic off-hand comments on the spells and attacks the Destined One makes, including if they were to miss some attacks like a fully-charged heavy strike. Bajie will also boast about his strength and rake in battle. In the beginning of chapter 5, Bajie will be in his boar form, charging and ramming into enemies to kill them, send them flying or stagger them. In the final part of chapter 6, Bajie will once again transform into his boar form to charge at several celestial soldiers, knocking several off the mountain and leaving a bunch of staggered soldiers remaining for the Destined one to kill.

Journey to the West

Zhu Bajie is one of the central key characters in the novel Journey to the West, he is a fellow companion that travelled with Sun Wukong, Tang XuanZang, Sha Wujing and Bai Longma to retrieve the Buddha's Scriptures in India and deliver them back to China. Zhu Bajie originally held the title of Tiānpéng Yuánshuài (天篷元帅; lit. "Marshal Canopy"), commander-in-chief or Admiral of 80,000 Celestial sailors. However, he was later banished for misbehavior. At a party organized for all the significant figures in Heaven, Bajie saw the Chang'e (goddess of the Moon) for the first time and was captivated by her beauty. Following a drunken attempt to seduce her, she reported this to the Jade Emperor and thus he was banished to Earth. Zhu Bajie was sentenced to a thousand lives where each life would end in a love tragedy. In some retellings of the story, his banishment is linked to Sun Wukong's downfall. In any case, he was exiled from Heaven and sent to be reincarnated on Earth, where by mishap he fell into a pig sty and was reborn as a pig-demon known as Zhū Gāngliè (猪刚鬛 the "strong-maned pig"). In the earlier portions of Journey to the West, Wukong and Tang Sanzang come to Gao village and find that a daughter of the village elder had been kidnapped and the abductor left a note demanding marriage. In some versions of the story Bajie has convinced the elder to allow him to marry the daughter based on his ability to do large amounts of hard work due to his prodigious strength. The elder recants when he discovers that, although Zhu Bajie manages to do quite a lot of work in the fields, he manages to eat so much that the farm is losing money anyways. After some investigations, Wukong found out that Bajie was the "villain" behind this. He fought with Wukong, who learns after defeating Bajie that he has also been recruited by Guanyin to join their pilgrimage and make atonements for his past sins. Bajie is then inducted into the group for the journey soon after, Tang Xuanzang changed his name from Zhu Ganglie to Zhu Bajie (Meaning 8 Precepts Pig), during the course of the journey Bajie and Wukong have an endless string of moments of friendship, pranks and bickering amongst each other. At the end of the novel, most of Bajie's fellow pilgrims achieve enlightenment and become Buddhas and Arhats, but he does not; although much improved as a person, he is still too much a creature of his base desires due to being the least spiritually developed of the group. He is instead rewarded for his part in the pilgrimage's success and protecting Tang Xuanzang with a job as "Cleanser of the Altars" (Chinese: 淨壇使者; pinyin: Jingtan Shizhe) which is basically a temple caretaker who looks after temples, cleans altars and eats leftover offerings. His actual rank in relation to the others is unclear, but possibly the lowest, regardless in the end Zhu Bajie managed to redeem himself overall and still manages to retain his human form and immortality as a reward. In the novel Zhu Bajie is depicted as being large at around 2 to 3m tall, in the television series he is potrayed as being of more average height, but here in the game Zhu Bajie is quite short in stature at around 2 feet tall.
